The 29th Holland Film Meeting (HFM), which is being held in Utrecht alongside the 36th Netherlands Film Festival (NFF), kicked off yesterday with some preparatory sessions and an opening event that brought together local and international professionals taking part in the four-day event.

Headed by Vanja Kaludjercic for the very first time (read more), the HFM is presenting several innovations this year. The event’s professional-orientated profile was reinforced with new proposals, and one of them is the strengthening of the Dutch presence and the particular attention being paid to emerging local professionals at an initiative named Talents en Route. In total, there were two new producers and two promising directors who were introduced last night at the professional’s opening gathering. In the coming days, these two men and two women will be taking part in a tailor-made programme allowing them to network with a wide range of European professionals, from producers and filmmakers to distributors and sales agents. Derk-Jan Warrink from Keplerfilm will be guiding them through the process.

But who are these talents “en route” to success? Erik Glijnis stands out as a motivated young producer who this summer started a collaboration with Amsterdam-based Lemming Film. After producing two shorts, which travelled to several festivals, Glijnis is now working on his feature debut, Nocturne [+lire aussi :

, along with director Viktor van der Valk. The film is expected to be finished by May 2017. At the same time, the producer is also involved with Guido Hendrikx: the duo is making the documentary feature Lessons of Europe, the post-production of which is expected to wrap in November.

Producer Juul Op den Kamp, best known for her graduation film If Mama Ain’t Happy, Nobody’s Happy, is also attending the HFM. She aims to tell stories with international appeal that lie somewhere between contemporary urgent journalism and fantasy. Her urge to know more led her first to the USA, then to the Philippines, where she directed and shot her self- financed, neutral documentary about immigration nostalgia, and worked as a freelance producer and researcher for several productions. She is now conducting research for a new documentary project.

Director Mees Peijnenburg has twice been nominated for a Crystal Bear at the Berlinale for his short films A Hole in My Heart and Even Cowboys Get to CryWe Will Never Be Royals won two Golden Calves last year at the Netherlands Film Festival. Peijnenburg, whose method embraces different narrative forms, combining them with a distinctive visual aesthetic, now wishes to expand his horizons to international co-productions.

Finally, the Talents en Route group is rounded off by Amsterdam-based Bosnian-Dutch filmmaker Ena Sendijarević, whose latest short, Import, was in the last Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and is the Dutch entry for the 2017 Oscars in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Sendijarević is currently working on her debut feature film.

Besides these four Dutch professionals, other locals are also attending the HFM to present their new projects, both in the work-in-progress sections and as part of the recently created BoostNL initiative. Anna van der Heide, Sacha Polak, Margot Schaap and Sander Burger are just some of the filmmakers whom Cineuropa will return to in the coming days, in order to unveil details of their upcoming features.

The HFM runs until 25 September. The Netherlands Film Festival continues until 30 September and will be brought to a close with the handing out of the Golden Calves trophies, celebrating the best of Dutch cinema from last year.
