The upcoming edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (29 June–7 July 2018) will pay tribute to the Austin Film Society (AFS), a US non-profit film organisation founded in 1985, which has now grown into one of the country’s most significant film institutions on the independent filmmaking scene. “A tribute to the Austin Film Society represents an exciting chapter in the KVIFF’s long-lasting focus on American independent film production. Richard Linklater and his colleagues have been a huge inspiration to film communities around the world, and we’re delighted to embrace the incredible achievement of the organisation with a selection of outstanding films from Texas,” says KVIFF’s artistic director, Karel Och.

“I'm so proud that the AFS is receiving this incredible honour from the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The KVIFF is fully committed to the discovery of new voices. It's deeply humbling that they've chosen to tribute the AFS by shining a light on the community of independent artists that we've worked so hard to nurture. With this series of films, the KVIFF celebrates creativity and uniqueness of vision, which have been the only consistent themes in the many wonderful films that have come out of Texas over the past 40 years,” Linklater stated in response to the KVIFF’s initiative. He is also among the first announced guests for the 53rd edition of the gathering.

A specially curated sidebar called “Made in Texas: Tribute to Austin Film Society” will present nine feature-length films and two programmes of short films, among them Athina Rachel Tsangari’s lo-fi sci-fi The Slow Business of Going, Richard Linklater’s debut feature, SlackerRobert Rodriguez’s feature debut, El Mariachi, and Andrew Bujalski’s Computer Chess, among others. Several early works will be showcased as part of a programme of short films originally curated by Jonathan Demme, revisiting the punk and new-wave scenes of Austin in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
