"L’immagine e la parola will be trying out a new formula this year that opens up to the collective," explains Carlo Chatrian, artistic director of Locarno Festival. We asked some artists who have impressed us with the strength of their portraits of mothers to come and talk at Locarno. This edition is therefore designed as a journey towards a greater plurality of voices via the various screenings and meetings that will take place. The programme also wants to be an open door to new developments and the Italian cinema that is so dear to Ticino but that we often unable to access. We’re confident that Bispuri and Nicchiarelli's films and Lattanzi's stories will touch audience members in an edition that will perhaps deal with emotions more directly than previous editions."

The three days of screenings, readings and discussions will open with the Swiss preview of Daughter of Mine [+lire aussi :

by Laura Bispuri, selected in International Competition at the last Berlinale. The biopic Nico, 1988 by Susanna Nicchiarelli will be presented on Saturday 17 March, while the last evening will be dedicated to a screening of The Guardians [+lire aussi :

by Xavier Beauvois, which tells the story of World War I from the point of view of women.

L’immagine e la parola will offer a more in-depth insight into the theme by guests who have been summoned to host a workshop on writing and its relationship with cinema for about thirty students and young professionals. On 16 March, Marta Donzelli and Gregorio Paonessa from Vivo Film, two of the most interesting Italian producers, who have supported films by the likes of Laura Bispuri, Emma Dante and many other contemporary directors, will address various themes such as: What are the challenges of new European cinema? How is a project structured and presented so that it garners the interest of local, national and international funds? Together with them Susanna Nicchiarelli will be speaking about strengthening the dynamic that is created between the director and the producer on a project.

On 17 March there will be a discussion with Laura Bispuri, director of Sworn Virgin [+lire aussi :

and Daughter of Mine, and the editor Carlotta Cristiani. The meeting will be devoted to analysing the writing process of the director's most recent project, which reflects on the theme of motherhood: how it morphed from an original idea to the writing of the script, from the choice of cast members and location to the final version of the script, from the shooting phase to the finished film. A journey that will compare sections of the script to sequences in the film.
