Non-fiction, room-scale virtual reality (VR) experience Vestige, breaks a record ahead of its world premiere in the Virtual Arcade section at the 17th Tribeca Film Festival, being snapped up by the UK-based VR distributor and sales agent, Other Set. This is the third-ever sale of a VR experience at a major film festival and the second for a documentary. The first immersive documentary sold was ZIKR: A Sufi Revival, earlier this year at Sundance. Behind this purchase was the established documentary sales agent Dogwoof, founded by Andy Whittaker, and whose new venture is Other Set, specialising in director-driven VR.

Vestige is a 12-minute, room-scale VR documentary directed by Aaron Bradbury, well-known for his impressive and similar-themed LoVR (2016), that takes the user into the mind of Lisa, a woman from Utah, who is grieving the loss of her former partner, Erik. By using multi-narrative and volumetric capture, the journey through Lisa’s memories takes a different path each time, as the heroine recalls different fragments of their life together. The sharing of all her memories will slowly unlock different paths leading to the cause of Erik’s death. This multi-layered viewing offers a different journey into the world of memory and grief.

Following the deal, Whittaker noted: “Vestige allows the viewer to experience the healing that can take place at the other side of grief and loss. The experience showcases the unique power of the VR medium to connect audiences to Lisa’s very human story, on a visceral, emotional level.”

The experience is co-produced by the newly-launched Paris-based immersive entertainment studio, Atlas V, which is also showing two more experiences in Tribeca: the Sundance-premiered animated film BattleScar starring Rosario Dawson, and cosmic documentary, Spheres: Pale Blue Dot, in collaboration with Darren Aronofsky, in world premiere. Co-founded by Antoine Cayrol, Pierre Zandrowicz and Arnaud Colinart, Atlas V is “working to re-focus VR storytelling towards a sustainable indie film production model.”

On the use of Depthkit’s volumetric capture technology, co-producer Paul Mowbray of the established Leicester-based studio NSC Creative mentioned: “Vestige is really pushing the limits of what can be done with volumetric capture and multi-narrative storytelling right now. Aaron’s success as a leading VR Creator comes from a deep technical knowledge across multiple disciplines, combined with a passion to connect with the audience in a profoundly emotional way.”

Vestige is a British-French-American co-production by Paul Mowbray (NSC Creative), Antoine Cayrol (Atlas V), and Jill Klekas Basmajian (RYOT). It was funded by the Kaleidoscope VR platform and received the support of the CNC. The release is set for Spring 2019 and the experience will be available for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets, as well as Microsoft’s line of Mixed Reality headsets. It will also be featured by streaming platforms Steam and Viveport.
