film profile], released in autumn 2007 after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

432 sold almost 71,000 tickets in ten weeks of screenings in Romanian cinemas in 2007. Some statistics stress that Mungiu’s film had more than 85,000 admissions, thanks to a free entrance film caravan that his production company Mobra Film organized in towns without cinemas.

The popularity of Child’s Pose makes this Parada Film production the most successful domestic release since 2002, when Nae Caranfil’s comedy Philanthropy sold 112,000 tickets, in an era when the Romanian cinema network was not destroyed by privatization.

As for the country’s overall box office for the first quarter of 2013, the total of 2.07 million tickets sold brings an 8.7% increase on 2012. The earnings amount to €8,4m, a 5% increase. This smaller increase is explained by inflation, as the earnings in the national currency show an increase of 8.5%.

The most successful releases of 2013 so far are Oz: The Great and Powerful and Gangster Squad, both with approximately 111,000 admissions. It is the first time in recent history when a Romanian film shows-up in domestic top ten, with Child’s Pose currently occupying the tenth place.
