Cineuropa met up with Austrian filmmaker Sudabeh Mortezai to talk about her film Macondo, which was selected in the Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! programme at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Her empathetically observed fiction debut is set in Vienna, and its story centres on the 11-year-old refugee Ramasan, who finds himself torn between Chechen custom and his new Austrian environment.
