The opening panel of the Co-Production Market at the 65th edition of the Berlinale was devoted to Isabel Coixet’s Nobody Wants the Night.

Producers Antonia Nava (Neo Art Producciones, Spain), Ariel Ilieff (One More Movie, Bulgaria) and Javier Méndez (MediaPro, Spain), moderated by Udo Abram, give an insight into the “epic adventure” they undertook while making the feature that opened the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival.

Using the film as a case study, the discussion panel aims to shed some light on the increasingly common financing strategy used for co-productions.

The producers reveal how the collaboration came to life, describing the circumstances that led the two Spanish production companies (Neo Art and MediaPro) and the Bulgarian outfit One More Movie to join forces on the project.

The discussion touches on the obstacles to financing films in Spain, the hard choices that had to be made to overcome the financial problems, and the eventual “rescue” provided by the last-minute involvement of MediaPro, which made the finalising of the film possible.

Disclosing anecdotes on writer Miguel Barros and how director Isabel Coixet became involved, producers Nava, Ilieff and Méndez go through the struggles they encountered in the production design, their regrets and their uncomfortable relationship with the critics.

The second part opens up the debate to the audience and deals in detail with the logistics of the project, including talking about the development process, budgeting and the flaws inherent in production treaties between Europe and other countries.

An enlightening overview of both the difficulties and the pleasures of co-production, and a peek into the companies’ future projects.
