In 2012, the MEDIA Programme of the European Union has awarded 15 million Euro to Germany, this amounts to 15,3% of the programme’s whole European funding budget.
154 projects of German distributors, producers, training initiatives, film festivals and numerous movie theaters were able to benefit from the funding. In European comparison, only France has received more funding. Moreover, 2 million Euro from the Europa Cinemas Network went to 105 cinema owners in Germany.
Within the last 20 years MEDIA has proven to be a reliable partner for the industry, and its logo is a well established seal of quality. In June the European parliament and the finance ministers of the EU member states have reached an understanding about the multiannual framework from 2014 to 2020. In early fall the budget for Creative Europe will be consolidated.
At this point the Commission is optimistic to launch all three pillars - MEDIA, Culture and the financial facility - with a higher budget than the programme 2007-2013. “The very good results and the visible effects of the MEDIA funding shows how positive a budget raise will be for the German audiovisual industry in the future” says Christiane Siemen, head of MEDIA Desk Germany.
