“A vitamin shot into the Swedish film sector”

- Nordisk Film, Swedish pubcaster SVT and regional film centre Film i Väst will co-produce features combining high quality with audience viability
“Our effort can be seen as a vitamin shot into the Swedish film sector, which needs to improve its production values in order to reach a broader audience. The aim is to raise the market share of domestic films in the Swedish repertoire,” said Tomas Eskilsson, CEO of Swedish regional film centre Film i Väst.
Co-producing an annual 30 features, the Trollhättan-based enterprise has teamed up with Danish major Nordisk Film and Swedish pubcaster SVT to launch new feature-film projects that combine high quality with audience viability, striving for quality in all aspects: scriptwriting, direction, casting, vision and theme.
“Our co-operation is undertaken to motivate talented Swedish filmmakers to focus more on production quality with the potential to reach an international audience,” added Nordisk Film’s Lone Korslund, chief of Nordic co-productions and acquisitions. The new projects will have budgets of between €3 million and €5 million, approximately 50% in excess of an average Swedish feature.
The three partners want to develop films that are and will be relevant to and will engage a broader audience in Sweden and in the rest of the world, consolidating the Swedish film brand for the domestic and international audience, they said in a statement.
“We want to raise the quality of Swedish film, strengthening our position in feature films among the Swedish cinema-goers and television viewers,” explained SVT’s commissioning editor for feature films and TV drama, Hanne Palmquist. Nordisk Film will be responsible for Nordic distribution of the movies, and TrustNordisk will handle international sales.
