Lover, Not a Fighter by Martina Buchelová

Catalonian boutique sales company Low Light Films has acquired the international sales rights to Lover, Not a Fighter, the debut feature by Slovak filmmaker Martina Buchelová. The news comes shortly after the Slovak-Czech coming-of-age romantic tragicomedy snagged the Proxima Grand Prix at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (see the news), where it celebrated its world premiere.

Written and directed by Buchelová, the film centres on Andrej, a young man trying to put a turbulent period behind him. Spending the summer helping his grandmother, steering clear of alcohol and attempting to avoid his old habits, he sees his carefully built plans begin to unravel when he unexpectedly falls for Míša. Blending warmth, humour and emotional honesty, the story traces a generation’s uncertain path through love, self-reinvention and adulthood.

“Martina has crafted a remarkably assured debut that is both emotionally generous and formally confident. Lover, Not a Fighter balances warmth, humour and vulnerability with a fresh cinematic voice, and we’re excited to support the film as it begins its international festival and distribution journey. We look forward to building a long-term strategy alongside the producers and introducing the movie to audiences worldwide,” said Low Light Films founder Jainer Morales.

The picture was produced by Ninja Film and Nochi Film, in co-production with Unit+Sofa Praha and Slovak public broadcaster STVR.

Lover, Not a Fighter marks Buchelová’s first feature following a string of acclaimed shorts. Her previous works include Magic Moments, which premiered at Toronto, and Green Wave, selected for Karlovy Vary’s Future Frames programme.
