Country Focus: Romanian box office grows 19% in the first semester
Voice of female directors getting stronger in Romania

- 2015 and 2016 will be the most “feminine” years in the history of local cinema
A recent analysis by the European Audiovisual Observatory has shown that European cinema is still a man’s world, with only 16.3% of the total number of features released between 2003 and 2012 being directed by women (see the news). Romanian cinema is certainly still a man’s world, but things are slowly changing: more than ten projects headed by female directors are currently at various stages of production, which means that 2015 and 2016 will be the most “feminine” years in the history of local cinema.
Ruxandra Zenide is studying maternity and exclusion in her The Miracle of Tekir [+see also:
film profile], a Swiss-Romanian co-production currently shooting in the villages around the city of Constanţa (see the news). Meanwhile, Anca Miruna Lăzărescu is in post-production with her debut feature, That Trip We Took with Dad (see the news), a tragicomedy about an ailing father travelling to East Germany with his two sons in 1968. The family’s itinerary will be affected by the invasion of Czechoslovakia.
Iulia Rugină will release Another Love Building, the sequel to her first feature, Love Building [+see also:

film profile], in December, and she is also preparing Breaking News [+see also:

film profile], a drama about an arrogant TV reporter whose life will be completely transformed by tragedy. Anca Damian is finishing off Moon Hotel Kabul and is preparing for a spring shoot for her drama In Perfect Health (see the news), about a young lawyer investigating the mysterious death of his father.
Ana Lungu will soon wrap post-production for The Self-Portrait of a Dutiful Daughter [+see also:
film profile], her debut feature (see the news), while Adina Pintilie is currently casting Touch Me Not, a drama about several characters in search of intimacy, which will start shooting next spring. Cristina Iacob, meanwhile, is preparing Three Days to Get Married, the sequel to #Selfie [+see also:
film profile], Romania’s most successful domestic release of 2014.
As for projects in development, Ioana Uricaru is readying Lemonade, a drama about a Romanian woman and her experiences after emigrating to the United States, Eva Pervolovici is looking for funding for Ileana, a drama about drug dealers, and Mihaela Popescu is developing her first feature, 6PM.
