European cinemas register a record 1,34 billion visits in 2019
- European cinema admissions are set for a record-breaking feat unmatched since the early 1990s, according to UNIC's provisional update on admissions and box office revenues
European cinema admissions increased by 4.5 per cent in 2019, with over 1.34 billion visits across the region - a record-breaking feat unmatched since the early 1990s. In the European Union, cinemas recorded their best results for 15 years, with admissions reaching the 1 billion mark for the first time since 2004. These exceptional figures serve to highlight the continued strength and adaptation of the sector. While some data remains to be collated and figures for certain territories are based only on initial estimates, the overview provided by International Union of Cinemas (UNIC) represents the first wide-ranging assessment of the performance of the European cinema sector in 2019 (more detailed final data on the performance of each territory will be released in Spring 2020).
While final box office figures for several territories remain to be collated, it can already be estimated that total box office for Europe will pass the €8.5 billion mark - compared to €8.0 billion in 2018. For the EU, estimates indicate over €7.1 billion in box office revenues - compared to €6.8 billion in the previous year. As has been the case in the past, the box office was mainly driven by international titles including, but not limited to, The Lion King, Avengers: Endgame, Joker, Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4. film profile]. Once final box office figures for all UNIC territories are available, precise total box office revenues and the percentage increase compared to 2018 will be shared by the association.
Admissions per capita for all UNIC territories (where data was available) remained stable at 1.5 average visits per year. Ireland and France (at 3.3 and 3.2 respectively) again experienced the highest rates of cinema-going, followed by Estonia (2.8), the UK (2.7), Denmark and Spain (both at 2.3). Turkey (54 per cent), France (35 per cent) and Poland (28.8 per cent) again experienced the highest national films' market share across UNIC territories, as the Czech Republic, Denmark, Albania, Estonia, Russia, Germany, Italy and Latvia all managed a national films' market share of above 20 per cent. Due to incomplete figures for several countries, it is too early to assess the total market share for European films in 2019.
