INCONTRI #7 looks at the new challenges facing the film and TV industry
- At the Film Conference organised by the IDM Film Commission, producers, broadcasters and financiers analysed distribution strategies and new forms of international co-production
From 24 to 26 April the Alto Adige region hosted the 7th edition of INCONTRI, the Film Conference organised every year by the IDM Film Commission. In Soprabolzano approximately 70 exhibitors from the film and television industry came together, including producers, broadcasters and financiers, to analyse distribution strategies, new forms of international co-production that are possible in the audiovisual sector today, also by studying the increasingly competitive relationship between television and film, and to exchange future hypotheses and prospects.
At the same time as INCONTRI #7 , the first edition of INCONTRI Focus! was held, during which 25 producers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and, for the first time this year, Luxembourg, met to discuss issues concerning international co-productions and the funding opportunities available in the respective countries.
During the first panel discussion, “Same Sky, Different Worlds? – The Filmmaker’s Journey between Cinema, TV and VoD”, Oscar-nominated director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall [+see also:

film profile]) painted a picture of his own film and TV experiences in the European and American markets. During the second panel discussion, “Film Distribution – The next level”, the participants instead focused on film distribution. They analysed new distribution methods and possible developments in the Italian market. The panel included Nicola Maccanico from Vision Distribution, Marco Chimenz from Cattleya, production partners from Vision and Alessandro Usai from production company Colorado Film. The strategies indicated by Nicola Maccanico included “that main strategy of generating greater interaction with audiences: we must adopt a more vertical approach, using different media and developing films with more specific targets, finding new ways of involving viewers”.
The “Storytelling in VR – Questions, Findings, Thoughts" panel was hosted Alexander Herrmann from Expanding Focus. Hermann clarified right from the off that"augmented reality and virtual reality are not just new technologies, they are a completely new way of communicating so we have to understand how they are really applied to the film industry”. At the moment the company is developing a nine-episode virtual reality sci-fi series called Future Diaries.
Finally the panel discussion “Producer’s New Best Friend? – The Rise of Content Marketing”, led by Matthijs Wouter Knol, the director of the European Film Market at the Berlinale, analysed the way that brands are relying increasingly on storytelling through film as a way of building up loyalty in consumers.
