Cinema's new voices make themselves heard in Doha
by Laura Nanchino
- The second edition of Qumra, organised by the Doha Film Institute, kicks off today in the Qatari capital
From 4-9 March, the Doha Film Institute is holding the second edition of its Qumra initiative. This event is intended to act as an inspiring setting for filmmakers from both Qatar and the rest of the world in a series of professional meetings, film screenings and master classes. This week of meetings is aimed specifically at all industry professionals – both experts and novices alike.
This year, the focus is being put on emerging filmmakers. A total of 23 feature films and ten shorts currently in production will benefit from this opportunity for personalised mentorship sessions and meetings with industry professionals. The event will also provide an opportunity for films currently in production to be screened, as well as sessions reflecting on the development process, the legal aspects of co-production, and international sales.
New voices from the cinema industry, supported by the Doha Film Institute, will have pride of place with the screening of two feature films – Jonas Carpignano's Mediterranea [+see also:

Five world-renowned directors will also be invited to share their experiences. Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Naomi Kawase, Joshua Oppenheimer, James Schamus and Alexander Sokurov will all be presenting one of their feature films. Each of these screenings will be followed by a Q&A session and a master class.
Sheikha al Mayassa, president of the Qatar Museums Authority, hopes that this can be part of a larger scheme of national cultural policy development: “We know that these few days together are only the beginning of new collaborations and creative networks that will form long-lasting, productive relationships into the future.”
