Prince Neckludjov is sitting on a jury called to pass judgment on the prostitute Katjusha Maslova, who is accused of having robbed and poisoned a client.
To his dismay, Neckludjov recognizes the accused as a servant girl he once loved at his aunt's villa, only to abandon her for his brilliant military career in Moscow.
