BOOK SMUGGLERS
synopsis
An Irish poet and a Lithuanian stage director retrace the steps of the 19th century Lithuanian Book Smugglers, who risked their lives to resist Russification and protect their language from extinction by smuggling books, newspapers, and magazines into Lithuania from Prussia and distributing them along clandestine networks. Travelling through the forests and along the rivers, each of them learns something about the other’s country and the links between language and identity.
