ASFOURI

by Fouad Alaywan

synopsis

Abu Afif's building had lived through Lebanon's Civil War. Guerilla groups, militias, displaced civilians and invaders, had all passed through and written reminders on its walls. Words that reminded Abu Afif's returning grandson, Karim, of his childhood in Beirut during the war and drew him back to the capital for its reconstruction. Asfouri plays out between 1975 and 1997, examining the destinies of the building's inhabitants who were from different religious backgrounds, against the backdrop of a love story between Karim and Maya and reaches a moment of reckoning: will the building and all its memories be demolished or not?
