MUSHROOMS

by Pawel Borowski

synopsis

An older woman gathering mushrooms in the forest encounters a pair of young people dressed in noble attire. The sudden meeting causes confusion on both sides. The young people claim they are lost but are strangely mysterious. On one hand, they are pleased to have found someone who can show them the way and guide them through unfamiliar territory; however, they are also exceptionally distrustful. The woman herself has very mixed feelings about changing her plans. She wants to help the young people, especially since the girl has twisted her ankle, but she doubts their stories and intentions. Their sparse explanations and curt responses raise increasing suspicions in the older woman. The desperation and nervousness of the young people towards the woman create an atmosphere of uncertainty. The elderly woman feels threatened, and when she tries to lead the pair to the village, she is attacked. However, she is not as defenseless as she initially seems. The story’s conclusion will leave no one indifferent.
