The year is 1945. The war is finally over. Denmark is free, but divided. Much has changed for the Skov family, Karl and Eva's marriage is fraying, and Eva decides to leave her husband. At the same time, a brutal legal showdown awaits Karl and those who collaborated with the Nazis during the war. Aksel and his comrades from the resistance watch with growing frustration as the country struggles to rebuild itself and along the way sees the goal of a new and better Denmark crumble. Meanwhile, Aksel's siblings, Valdemar, Helene and Knud's widow Britta, come together around a common dream that opens up new perspectives for the family.
