AFTER ELENA

by Shawn Garry

synopsis

Following the death of his wife, Roberto, a seventy-year-old widower who longs for peace, finds his carefully ordered life disrupted when his three adult children return to the family home, each carrying their own failures, secrets, and wounds. Forced to live under the same roof, they gradually discover that the true inheritance is not material wealth, but the silences, guilt, and ways of loving they have unknowingly inherited. As his children struggle to confront old wounds, Roberto faces a more intimate question: how do you go on living when the person who gave meaning to your identity is no longer there? Blending dark humor, tenderness, and a deeply humane perspective, After Elena explores grief, aging, and the possibility of reinventing oneself when family compels us to confront what we believed had long been resolved.
