ZUSTISSIA
synopsis
In 1991, a triple murder committed in the mountains of Southern Sardinia led to the swift conviction of an innocent man: Beniamino Zuncheddu. All three tiers of the justice system were rushed through in a single year to impose a life sentence. Twenty-five years later, a young lawyer decides to fight - pro bono - to win back his freedom. Zustissia is the story of a life stolen by the longest miscarriage of justice in Italian history: 33 years of wrongful imprisonment. It is also the story of the gripping battle waged by lawyer Mauro Trogu and other allies to obtain a review of the case and an acquittal, delivered on 26 January 2024. It is an investigative film, and one of civic commitment, friendship and love. A love for “sa zustissia”, a love for the truth, and a love for the mountains, those marvellous peaks from which Beniamino was kept away for a lifetime… and where he has now, at last, returned.
