Köves is a Jewish teenager who lives an ordinary life in Budapest in 1944. Shortly after his father is arrested and sent to a working camp, Köves himself is taken in a cattle train to Auschwitz and then Buchenwald. Köves does not rebel against his destiny, does not show any surprise, and does not try to escape.
