Cristian Mungiu

Cristian Mungiu (b. 1968, Iaşi, Romania) studied English literature and film direction. Since finishing film studies, during which he gained experience as an assistant director on foreign shoots in Romania, he has presented his work at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals. His first feature West (2002) premiered at Cannes. In 2003 he founded the production company, Mobra Films. He contributed the episode “Turkey Girl” to the collection of film stories Lost and Found – Six Glances of a Generation (KVIFF 2005). After being awarded the Palme d’Or, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) also screened at Karlovy Vary. His two most recent films triumphed in competition at Cannes as well: In 2012 his Beyond the Hills (KVIFF 2012) won Best Screenplay and Best Actress for both leads, and in 2016 the jury honoured Mungiu with the Best Director Award for Graduation.
