GoCritic! Animafest Zagreb 2019

The second GoCritic! workshop of 2019 is taking place at the Animafest Zagreb - World Festival of Animated Film from 3 to 8 June. Six participants will be writing about the best new feature and short animated films from around the world, and will be tutored by Vladan Petkovic. Grace Han is a Pittsburgh-born, Seoul-raised, globe-trotting film researcher. Since obtaining a degree in art history and political science at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, she has worked as a programmer for Campus Movie Fest. On the side, she has also squeezed in a publication, a presentation, and a multimedia short with Marimo Mag, the Society for Animation Studies and the Cannes Film Festival respectively. In the fall, she will begin her MA programme at The Courtauld Institute in London, studying the intersections of art history and film through animation.

Veronika Hanáková (Czech Republic)

Veronika Hanáková is a student in the Department of Film Studies at Charles University in Prague. During her studies, she was awarded a six-month academic fellowship at Southampton University. Her current research is on the history of Czech animation and on contemporary digital animation. Since 2016, she has worked for Mezipatra Queer Film Festival as a programmer and in 2018, she worked as a programme coordinator within the team organising the 22nd Ji.hlava IDFF. Veronika is also a web editor for the Czech Film Critic Awards and occasionally publishes her texts in a number of periodicals.

Marie Ketzscher is a Berlin-based film aficionada with a background in English literature. She is a critic for the online magazine berliner-filmfestivals.de. Animated short films are her main focus – a passion that has its roots in Ludwigsburg where, for five years, she was Head of PR at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg’s Institute of Animation. She currently works as a PR Officer at Berlinale Talents and supports other cultural projects on a freelance basis for all things PR; in 2018 she was also a programme consultant for the 27. dokumentART film festival. After years of conceptualisation and procrastination, she will finally launch a feminist (pop)culture blog together with a friend in 2019.

Paolo Russo (Italy / UK)

Paolo Russo (Italy / UK)

Paolo Russo is an Italian freelance animator and up-and-coming film critic living in England. He is deeply passionate about cinema both as a filmmaker and a film lover. After an Intensive Foundation Course in Art and Design at Oxford Brookes University, he moved to Bristol to study animation at the UWE, where he developed his skills as a 2D and an under camera animator. His graduation film The Pangolin and the Hedgehog is a children's animation entirely hand-painted on glass. Once settled in Bristol, Paolo worked on a series of commissions as a freelance animator, including a hand-drawn music video for the song “Empty Sea” by Will Newsome and as a storyboard artist for Unanico Group on a Netflix children's show. He is currently enrolled on an MA in Contemporary Film Culture at UWE Bristol, developing skills in film criticism, festival curation, and film distribution.

Pablo Staricco Cadenazzi is a France-based Uruguayan journalist, film critic and member of FIPRESCI. Pablo's cinema of choice goes from independent Latin American films, through hidden genre gems, to compelling Hollywood blockbusters. He has worked in print, digital and radio media and was a staff member for the Uruguayan newspapers El País and El Observador. In 2019 he was part of the IFFR Young Film Critics trainee programme.

Lisa van der Waal (Netherlands)

Lisa van der Waal is a Dutch film journalist who writes for frame.land. Following her Master's degree in Film Studies and Visual Culture, she took part in several film critic workshops, among others a summer school on Michelangelo Antonio organised by De Filmkrant. Besides this, she has volunteered at a variety of film festivals in the Netherlands and Belgium, she provides film recommendations for a local radio station and is a cinema board member. She recently started work in the marketing department of a theatre.
