David Lindner Leporda • Producer, Filmallee GmbH
“In documentaries there is no escape”
- Interview with David Lindner Leporda, producer for German outfit Filmallee GmbH and selected for the 2019 Emerging Producers programme
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
David Lindner Leporda: The documentary film has an emotional potential that fiction films don't have. It is derived from the inherent promise of documentaries that everything in it is true. When something becomes too emotional for the audience then there is a backdoor in every fiction film saying that "this is not real". In documentary films that door is closed. There is no escape. That is why documentaries have a very special power and by implication a responsibility that comes with it.
I believe it is absolutely true that documentary films are an instrument of social and political change – not necessarily alone but bound together with a movement they can be a potent catalyser, especially when they manage to bring down the fact and figures to a universal and emotional level.
What qualities should a documentary producer have these days?
Conviction, perseverance, sensibility and passion.
What do you think is the future of distribution of documentary films?
I think that documentary films will be distributed on all channels the old and the new ones. It will always depend on the nature of the project which channel and marketing strategy will be the more effective one. Clearly it's become increasingly possible to market a niche film directly to a niche audience with the help of new media. Considering the high percentage of niche films in the documentary genre this changed a lot already.
What projects do you have under way (including in the area of fiction film and other projects)?
Fever, 100 min, feature documentary, in pre-production, social drama
Saving Mozart, 120 min fiction feature film, in financing, period music drama
Twilight Snow, 100 min, fiction feature film, packaging, period Alpine revenge Western
The Italian Trip, 120 min, fiction feature film, in development, period adventure
Hotze, 100 min, fiction feature film, in development, music comedy
Inside Leo, 100 min, animation, in development, family entertainment
(all are working titles)
