- The Portuguese producer discusses his approach to documentary and lists his upcoming projects
An interview with Daniel Pereira, producer for Portuguese company The Stone and the Plot, now selected for the 2025 Emerging Producers programme. Read his EP profile here.
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you see documentary cinema as an instrument of social and political change?
Daniel Pereira: I produce all kind of genres, including documentaries, as I believe cinema can present itself in different forms. I believe in cinema, most of all, as an art capable of better understanding the world we live in.
How do you achieve and maintain work-life balance and foster overall well-being?
I try not feel pressured by the usual modus operandi of the cinema industry. I try not to work too much and to remember how good life is when one’s not working. I’m not always successful at this, though.
Where do you find audiences for your films?
I always expect to find them in movie theatres, first and foremost.
What projects do you have underway?
We’re finishing post-production of Pescadores de Bubaque, a documentary by Pedro Florêncio and shooting the documentaries Histórias de Joaquina da Anta, by Agnes Meng and A Voz de Todos, by Manuel Mozos. We’re also finishing the teaser of 049, an animation project by António Nuno Júnior and Rui Rasquinho. Later this year, we will shoot two fictions: the short The Wave by Ramón de los Santos, and the feature Anda daí by João Lameira.
