Ardant’s Ashes and Blood to screen out of competition

Actress Fanny Ardant’s debut directorial feature, Ashes and Blood [+see also:

(see news), will be presented out of competition in the Official Selection (see news) at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24). The French/Romanian co-production is adapted from Albanian writer Ismaïl Kadaré’s essay Eschyle Ou le Grand Perdant (“Aeschylus, the Great Loser”).

Starring Ronit Elkabetz and Abraham Belaga, Ashes and Blood was produced by Paolo Branco for Alfama Films. The €2.41m budget included co-production support from Arte France Cinéma, Hirsch, DD Productions and Romanian company Libra Film (30% investment).

Pre-bought by Canal + and Ciné Cinéma, the film also received €500,000 from France’s National Film Centre (CNC) and €200,000 from its Romanian counterpart. Rezo Films will release the title in France, while Alfama Films/Mad Filmes are handling international sales.
