Pakalnina's Silence in official short film competition

by

Laila Pakalnina, Latvia’s most internationally renowned filmmaker, is back at Cannes after an eleven-year pause, with Silence (Klusums), selected as one of nine short films in official competition.

Pakalniņa’s 1998 feature film The Shoe screened in Un Certain Regard, as well as two of her short documentaries, in 1994 (The Ferry) and 1995 (The Mail).

Silence is the fourth of five shorts that represents the five elements. Previous films of the series are Water (2006), which competed in the 2006 Berlinale; Fire (2007), nominated for Best European Short Film by the European Film Academy; and Stones (2008), in the Locarno Film Festival’s official programme.
