Slovak film sell at Cannes

Film Europe closed a number of deals on Slovak films at Cannes, giving managing director Marta Lamperova reason to point to a promising future for the country's cinema.

Ivan Vojnar’s My Husband's Women went to Poland (Polmedia) and Greece (ERT). The film will have its world premiere in Shanghai before opening the Art Film Fest in Trencin and going on to Karlovy Vary.

Broken Promise by Jiri Chlumsky also sold to Polmedia and to Japan (Aya Pro). The film has already won the grand prize at the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival. It will also screen in Shanghai and Karlovy Vary. It is distributed in North America by Picture This! Entertainment.

Film Europe sold Laura Sivakova’s Heaven, Hell ... Earth to Poland (Vivarto) and has registered interest from Russia. The film is already in cinemas in Slovakia and is looking for an international premiere.

Lamperova noted that while Slovak documentaries like Blind Loves [+see also:

have enjoyed success in the past, the international market has seen few Slovak features.

Young Slovak filmmakers are becoming more aggressive about finding financing and promoting their films abroad, Lamperova says. She praises the Slovak Film Institute and Audiovisual Information Center for their past efforts in promoting Slovak film and says that the time was ripe for a sale agent to step in.

Lamperova points to a several films and upcoming projects which hold further promise for Slovak cinema: Slovak/Irish/Czech co-production Foxes [+see also:

by Mira Fornay, for which Film Europe will handle sales; Vlado Balko’s Soul at Peace, which will compete at Karlovy Vary; and Peter Bebjak’s Apricot Island, a love-triangle story due for release this autumn.
