Tornatore’s Baarìa to inaugurate 66th Venice Fest
Written and directed by Oscar winner Giuseppe Tornatore, Baarìa will open the 66th Venice Film Festival , to be held on the Venetian Lido from September 2-12 and once again directed by Marco Müller. The film will be in competition.
Baarìa, which will have its world premiere on September 2 in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema, is the first film in 20 years to open the festival. It represents one of the biggest Italian projects in years, with a budget of €28m, according to Tunisian magnate Tarek Ben Ammar, president of Eagle Pictures, which co-produced the film with Medusa Film (who will release the title in Italy on September 25).
The film stars Francesco Scianna and Margareth Madè in a star-studded cast that includes Monica Bellucci, Angela Molina, Nicole Grimaudo, Luigi Lo Cascio, Enrico Lo Verso, Laura Chiatti, Michele Placido, Paolo Briguglia, Donatella Finocchiaro and Raoul Bova.
