Arcipelago stays closer to home during economic crisis
Celebrating its 17th edition, despite the growing global economic crisis, one of the Italy’s oldest and most prestigious events of its kind, the Arcipelago International Festival of Shorts and New Images (Rome, June 12-18) this year features a “generous” and somewhat autarchic programme.
“This year has been characterised by the generosity of everyone, from the artists to the staff, except for the institutions,” said artistic director Stefano Martina. "It is impossible to ignore how difficult a year this had been for all those working in culture and cinema in particular, but we are still here, with a wonderful programme that focuses prevalently on Italian titles, for economic reasons, that are by no means of inferior quality”.
Of the 1,200 shorts submitted, 40 make up the international competition Short Planet, which includes various works from Latin America and Eastern Europe and three Italian shorts. The Extra Large documentary section features 15 titles.
Actor Valerio Mastandrea is the subject of this year’s Arcipelago retrospective, with 17 shorts in which he has appeared.
