Gieling’s work, whose previous films include the documentaries Johan Cruijff – En Un Momento Dado and Joaquin Sabina – 19 Días Y 500 Noches, has often been strongly influenced by Spain.

In Tramontana, which Gieling wrote as well as directed, the wind of the title is an added force in a scandalous love story between an older man, Pepet Tremolls (Soler), and an 18-year-old girl, Rosa Campos de Amor (Cobo). The story is set during the Franco years and also features a mysterious murder that happens on Christmas Eve.

The film co-stars Pepa López, Gorka Lasaosa, Sebastián Haro and Blanca Martinez. Cinematography was handled by Goert Giltay, Paul M. van Brugge composed the score, Boris Gerrets is responsible for the editing. Guus van Geffen and Bernadette Corstens are, respectively, the art director and costume designer.

Tramontana is produced by Pieter van Huystee Film with backing from the Dutch Film Fund, the Buddhist Broadcast Organisation, the Thuiskopiefonds, the CoBO Fund and the Jan Heeremans Fund.

The film will be released in the Netherlands on September 24 through Wild Bunch. The Netherlands Film Festival runs September 23-October 2.
