Wallimage/Bruxellimage announces first results
The much-awaited results of the first Wallimage/Bruxellimage session have just been announced. There are no great surprises, for the commission has honoured its commitments by supporting both Brussels and Flemish works, as well as a documentary.
Among the well-known names is Marion Hänsel, who will receive funding for her new film, Noir Océan (“Black Ocean”). It depicts the daily life and internal struggles of a crew on board a French naval ship in 1974, who were involved in nuclear tests carried out in Mururoa at the time.
Wallimage/Bruxellimage also selected Frédéric Sojcher, who returns with his second feature, Operation Weed, to be produced by Saga Film.
Artemis will also get backing for Jeanne Labrune’s next film, minority co-production Sans Queue Ni Tête (“Cock-and-Bull”), starring Michèle Laroque and François Berléand.
On the Flemish side, the commission chose two debut features. Kaat Beels’ Swooni (Eyeworks) centres on six Brussels residents who rediscover the value of emotional, familial and social solidarity.
Meanwhile, Michael R Roskam’s detective film Rundskop looks at hormone dealing in the farming industry and pits two childhood friends against each other, including Matthias Schoenaert, the darling of Flemish cinema. The film is produced by Savage, and co-produced by Artémis and Holland’s Waterland.
Lastly, the commission selected the documentary Black Heart, White Men (Eklektik Productions) by Samuel Tilman. This promising project traces the history of colonisation in the Congo using archive images and animated sequences.
The film, which will also be the subject of a three-part documentary series, will be released just in time for the Congo’s 50th anniversary independence celebrations.
