According to the section’s vice-president Sylvain Auzou, these two films represent “the future of European auteur cinema, with a directorial approach that doesn’t alienate mainstream audiences”.

film profile] (winner of the Europa Cinemas Label Award) in 2006, Daniel Sánchez Arévalo returns to the Venice sidebar this year with Gordos.
This second feature, whose shoot was extended for ten months in order to enable the cast to gain or lose weight depending on script requirements, was once again produced by José Antonio Félez for Tesela PC. Alta Classics will release the film domestically on September 11.
More surprising is the selection of Daniel Monzón’s fourth work Cell 211, produced by Morena Films, Vaca Films and Telecinco. Venice Days director Giorgio Gosetti said the film “takes as its starting point the clearly defined prison drama genre, and adds auteur film and thriller elements”. Paramount Pictures will release the title domestically in the autumn.
