D’Alatri takes to the seas with newcomer cast
Filming begins on September 3 on Alessandro D’Alatri’s seventh feature, Sul Mare (“At the Sea”), based on the novel In Bilico Sul Mare by Anna Pavignano (who wrote many of Massimo Troisi’s films). The shoot, in HD, will last ten weeks on the island of Ventotene and Formia.
Scripted by the director and Pavignano, the low-budget film (€700,000) is produced by D’Alatri’s Buddy Gang with Warner Bros Pictures Italia, which will distribute the film in Italy in the spring of 2010.
"The film goes against all the rules of the Italian [film] industry,” says D’Alatri. "Which means that the budget is not guaranteed by the actors, those ten names that raise costs to immoral highs and render our cinema more and more uniform”. The cast is made up of all newcomers, including young actors Dario Faiella and Martina Codecasa, who play the leads, Salvatore and Martina, respectively.
In the story, the former, a 20-year-old who takes tourists around on his boat, meets Martina, a girl from Genoa who comes to Ventote for the scuba diving. They begin a passionate love affair until Martina disappears.
