Irish writer/director David O’Reilly’s short Please Say Something has won the Cartoon d’Or 2009, the European Association of Animation Film’s award.

The film won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at Berlin earlier this year. The jury comprised directors Serge Elissalde (France), Kari Juusonen (Finland) and Tomm Moore (Ireland). The MEDIA Programme of the European Union supports the award.

Meanwhile, Luke Snellin won the Virgin Media Shorts 2009 award for his film Mixtape from over 2000 competition entries. His film was chosen from a shortlist of 12 by a panel including Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey, actress Gemma Arterton and BAFTA Rising Star award winner Noel Clarke.

Snellin will receive £30,000 funding towards his next film from Virgin Media and the UK Film Council. Andrew Gaynord won the People’s Choice Award for CGI-Brows and Michael Mann won the Mobile Shorts Award for Rush 60.

Spacey said, “I was once again hugely impressed with the quality and diversity of the 12 short-listed films in this year’s Virgin Media Shorts competition. It’s great to see so much new talent.”

Clarke said, “I always like to support young talent to keep the industry alive and vibrant and that’s exactly why I got involved in Virgin Media Shorts. The standard of entries was incredible and I loved Mixtape, simple yet perfectly executed.”

Arterton said, “The quality of entries in this year’s competition was really impressive. I’m sure Luke (Mixtape), Andrew (CGI-Brows) and all our short listed film makers have a bright future ahead of them and I look forward to our paths crossing in the future.”
