has been selected to represent Poland in the nomination race for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, to be awarded on March 7 of next year, after the final five nominees are creamed off on February 2.

The film unfolds over two different time periods: the present day and the 1950s. It centres on 30-something Sabina (Agata Buzek), whose life seems incomplete without a man to make her happy, her mother (Krystyna Janda) and grandmother (Anna Polony). The latter two are concerned about Sabina’s loneliness and try, in their own way, to find her a suitable man.

It is difficult to categorise The Reverse in a specific cinematic genre, as was the director’s intention. "It starts as a dramatic comedy about the Stalin era, transforms into a film noir, then a black comedy", said the director.

The film is the first production in 14 years by KADR, the legendary studio which hosted works by the famous Polish Film School (including Jerzy Kawalerowicz – founder and president of KADR until 2007 – Kazimierz Kutz, Stanisław Lenartowicz and Tadeusz Konwicki).

The Reverse was written by Andrzej Bart and lensed by Marcin Koszalka. Syrena Films will launch the title in Polish theatres on November 6.
