FESTIVALS France

New Italian cinema debuts at Annecy

by

“The festival has introduced France to many young directors, whose films it always tries to help find distribution. I’ve seen Italian films at Annecy that I wasn’t able to see at home. We must be grateful to this festival,” says Ettore Scola, honorary president of Annecy Cinéma Italien (September 29-October 6).

The event, which for over 27 years has been bringing new Italian cinema (only first and second films) to France, will this year also feature a retrospective-tribute to Jean-Louis Trintignant, who made over 20 films in Italy, including Dino Risi’s Il Sorpasso, Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist and Scola’s The Terrace.

The latter includes the world premiere of Lucio Fiorentino’s feature debut Pandemia, a “contemporary science fiction” tale, and Piero Tomaselli’s Velma, the strange story of a fisherman and a young woman set in Venice.

The programme also features a documentary competition, a series of “Portraits” by directors and actors, special events – dedicated to Maurizio Scaparro, a handful of Italian premieres and the 20th anniversary of production/distribution company Fandango – a retrospective of titles from Apuglia and the presentation of the Sergio Leone Award to Edoardo Winspeare.
