54th Seminci fest draws to a close

The 54th Seminci Film Festival in Valladolid awarded its top prize, the Golden Spike, to Goran Paskaljevic’s Honeymoons [+see also:

. This demonstrates once again cinema’s power to transcend difficult borders, as is the case in this Serbian/Albanian co-production about two couples who decide to leave their native countries in order to realise their dreams.

This is the third time the Serbian director has received the award, after winning it for Someone Else’s America (1998) and The Optimists [+see also:

The Seminci competition jury, presided by Italian director Ettore Scola, also gave triple honours to Annette K. Olesen’s Danish title Little Soldier [+see also:

, which took home the Silver Spike, Best Actress (Trine Dyrholm) and Best Cinematography.

Meanwhile, Robert Guédiguian’s French film The Army of Crime [+see also:

nabbed the Special Jury Prize and Best Screenplay.

Finally, Spain’s Alberto San Juan picked up Best Actor for his performance in Félix Sabroso and Dunia Ayaso’s drama The Island Inside.
