Spiral of revenge in Dyga’s Run to Ground

by

Where is the line between becoming a hero and turning into an enraged beast? How do you stop the spiral of revenge and violence? What are the different consequences of a single action? These are some of the questions explored in the thriller Run to Ground by 34-year-old director Zsombor Dyga, who attracted attention with Bro (2003) and Bedlam (2005).

The film’s shoot started on November 2 and will last until mid-December in Miskolc. The cast includes Eszter Ónodi (Shooting Star 2004), Andy Hefler, Kata Bartsch, Heinz Trixner and Zoltán Seress.

Written by Balázs Lovas, the film recounts three tragic stories which all appear, on first glance, to be set in the present day in a Central European city. A mother (Ónodi) suspects a karate teacher of sexually abusing her son’s friend and goes to the teacher’s house to see if the seven-year-old boy is really held captive there.

Meanwhile, an A&E doctor (Hefler) recognises a seriously injured patient as the man who killed his child years ago. He takes advantage of the situation to get his revenge, but plagued by moral dilemmas, he lets the man escape before going after him.

Finally, a speed skater at the end of her career (Bartsch) is blackmailed by a former policeman (Trixner), who knows that in the past she caused a woman’s death, for he turns out to be the victim’s widower.

The three stories are linked but don’t, in reality, have the same time frame, revealing a web of revenge and violence.

Run to Ground is produced by Peter Miklos Toth for Europa Film. Its €1.2m budget includes backing from the Hungarian Motion Picture Public Foundation (MMKA). International sales are still under negotiation.
