BERLINALE 2010

Retrospective planned for 60th Berlinale

by

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the Berlin Film Festival will present a retrospective entitled "Play It Again ...!" It will include 40 films that have marked the event’s history (from the Competition, Forum, Panorama and Generation sections).

UK critic David Thomson, who is heading this section, commented: "A festival like the Berlinale demonstrates how the controversial films of yesterday have become the classics of today". But he also said that some of the selected films may still "surprise or even shock audiences, (...) sparking debate at Berlin".

The retrospective will show films by auteurs like Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog and Zhang Yimou, and rare works (such as Curzio Malaparte’s The Forbidden Christ and Akira Kurosawa’s Living).

The line-up also includes films that caused a scandal when they first screened at Berlin. For instance, in 1976, Nagisa Oshima’s In the Realm of the Senses led to legal proceedings being taken against the Forum director for "dissemination of pornography".
