Eurimages fund inserted into reference system

To incentivise Italians towards European co-productions, as of 2010 Eurimages funds will be one of the criteria applied to the points given as part of the reference system the Italian Ministry of Culture (MIBAC) uses to deem which projects will receive state financing. The announcement came from Gaetano Blandini, director general of Cinema at MIBAC (who is leaving his post December 15), during a workshop held in Rome on November 19 entitled "Eurimages and Italy: How to stimulate access to European funds and improve co-productions between Italy and Europe".

Unlike other EU countries, Italy rarely (only three to six requests per year) turns to the European Council’s fund for co-productions, distribution and exhibition established in 1989, often simply due to scarce knowledge of how to access funding of up to 17% of a film’s budget, for a maximum of €700,000. In mid-December, a Cinema Desk will be opened in Brussels, to help all those within the industry find out how to gain access to European contribution and credits.

A desk open daily from 11-1 at the MIBAC’s General Direction for Cinema will offer information to filmmakers, and accompany them in the application process, on how to access European funds.
