Jokinen plans to shoot Hollywood film in Lapland

The Finnish director Antti Jokinen, well established in the US for his music videos and commercials, will be heading to Lapland and North Karelia with the Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth [+see also:

) for the shooting of Nicholas North, his first major project in his native land.

Jokinen is currently working on his first feature film The Resident for Hammer Films, with Hilary Swank in the lead. The €16m project Nicholas North will be his first project produced for his Helsinki-based Estar Studios, which has concentrated on providing production services and attracting foreign crews to Finland since 2006. Co-written by Jokinen and Matthew B. Wilder, Nicholas North will draw inspiration from Finnish legends known as the Kalevala. The story will focus on a young boy who sets out to save the Nordic people who have fallen under an evil spell.

According to a statement from Estar Studios, the film will be produced ‘in cooperation with a number of eminent Finnish partners’ and will feature well-known Finnish and Swedish actors who will play alongside US actress Moore. US producers John Baldecchi (The Mexican) and Howard Kaplan (The Good Shepherd) will act as co-producers.
