All the President's Women
After Woody Allen, Cannes´ most beloved Americans are this year´s jury president, David Lynch and one of his jurors, Sharon Stone. The director of Mulholland Drive does not have a film at Cannes this year, «I realise there´s a difference between taking part and judging but I couldn´t say what it is,» he said during his first press conference when he presented his «really special» jury. Europe has a strong showing in French film directors Claude Miller and Régis Wargnier, and their Danish counterpart, Bille August make a strong European contingent, Asia and South East Asia are represented by Chinese actress, Michelle Yeoh, the star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Indonesian actress-turned-producer, Christine Hakim. Latin and South America have Raoul Ruiz, the Chilean director and long-time French resident who came to the forefront of public attention in 1994 when he presented Three Lives and only One Death, starring Marcello Mastroianni, at Cannes, and Brazil´s Walter Salles, who directed Central do Brasil.
«Although my team is strong on film directors, I promise we won´t be prejudiced when we judge the films,» said Bille August reassuringly. «As far as we are concerned the films in competition can be in black and white, or shot in digital. It´s the stories that count, the ones that make you sit up and take notice.»
