VENICE 59 Tribute

A New Adventure

by

- A highlight of this Festival is today’s world premiere of the restored copy of Antonioni’s masterpiece. From the man who also brought you Red Desert, and Blow Up

Truffaut and his friends did not like his work all that much, but they were unable to fully appreciate his consummate use of the film camera. During the presentation of his Lifetime Achievement Golden Lion, Dino Risi remembered him with a famous one-liner uttered by Mario Soldati, “He invented incommunicability because he didn’t know how to write dialogue. Nevertheless, I believe all young directors should follow the example of this young man of 90 summers, who just finished making another film.”
Michelangelo Antonioni. A man you love and hate. It’s as simple as that.
He is the man who brought recognition to Italian cinema both at home and abroad. This “Architect of Images” is in Venice today, and together with his constant companion and wife, Enrica, Antonioni is the guest of honour at the world premiere of the restored copy of The Adventure.
The film was loving restored to its original glory by Mediaset and the SNC (National Film School) Foundation and opens a retrospective of Antonioni’s entire body of work that was organised by Cinecittà Holding, and curated by Carlo di Carlo in celebration of the great man’s landmark 90th birthday. The selection includes all his short and feature films including Red Desert, The Eclipse and Blow Up and the “Antonioni Project” first saw the light of day 14 years ago at the 41st Cannes Film Festival.
