Goodbye Katrin

by

- Known for her roles in Before the Rain and Breaking the Waves, she was on of Mike Leigh’s best loved actresses. Katrin Cartlidge has died at the age of 41

Katrin Cartlidge was an actress of extraordinary intensity. She wasn’t a star, but many people remember one of her last performances as the aggressive war correspondent in the Oscar winning film No Man’s Land. Katrin died yesterday from an lung infection after complications with septicaemia. She was born in London 41 years ago.

After she worked as an actress in theatres in Scotland and England in the 70’s and 80’s, this actress with long black hair and a penetrating look made her cinema debut in 1984 with a small part in Sacred Hearts. Success came with Naked, by Mike Leigh, where she played the strange young girl, ‘dark’. Immediately afterwards Milcho Manchevski chose her for Before the Rain . The acknowledgement for her artistic talent came with Breaking the waves by Lars von Trier, where she acted alongside Emily Watson. Once again Mike Leigh called upon her, this time for the main part in the film Career Girls, which won her a nomination for the European Film Awards, and again for Topsy Turvy. Katrin Cartlidge’s last important appearances are The Weight of Water (2000) by Kathryn Bigelow and From Hell, by the Hughes Brothers, where she appeared alongside Johnny Depp. In 2002, she worked with many other actresses in Searching for Debra Winger by Rosanna Arquette, a film about the pressure put on women who work in the entertainment industry.
