CANNES 2010 Official Selection
Seven Europeans to vie for Palme d’Or
by Cineuropa
The official selection for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival (May 12-23), unveiled at midday today in Paris by delegate general Thierry Frémaux, offers a surprising showcase. For the moment, there are 16 titles in competition, with a few places remaining for films racing against the clock in post-production.
The list of Palme d’Or contenders is a mix of major names in world cinema (including two former Cannes winners Mike Leigh and Abbas Kiarostami, other prize-winning directors like Takeshis Kitano, Alejandro González Inárritu, Bertrand Tavernier, Rachid Bouchareb, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Xavier Beauvois and Nikita Mikhalkov, and Daniele Luchetti, who returns to the competition) and five competition newcomers: Doug Liman, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Im Sang-soo, Matthieu Amalric and Sergei Loznitsa.
In a panorama that is very much representative of the diversity of international cinema, Europe dominates the list of hopefuls with seven films by three French directors (Tavernier, Beauvois and Amalric), a Brit (Leigh), an Italian (Luchetti) and two Eastern European filmmakers: Ukrainia's Loznitsa and Russian filmmaker Mikhalkov.
Asia has five directors in the line-up with two Koreans, one Japanese, a Thai and an Iranian. Africa also has some surprise hopefuls with Bouchareb representing Algeria and Mahamat-Saleh Haroun from Chad.
Latin America will be counting on Mexico’s Inárritu, while the United States is for the moment represented by Liman alone (while we wait for the remaining titles to be chosen).
The out-of-competition line-up looks particularly attractive with films by Woody Allen (who refused a place in competition), Oliver Stone and Stephen Frears. There will be Midnight Screenings of features by Gregg Araki and French director Gilles Marchand, and Special Screenings of features by Italy’s Sabina Guzzanti and Georgia’s Otar Iosseliani.
