CAOZ heats up buyers’ taste for 3D

Icelandic animation studio CAOZ is unveiling a promo-reel of its stereoscopic 3D feature Thor: The Edda Chronicles at the Cannes Market. The co-production with Germany (Ulysses Films) and Ireland (Magma Films) has pre-sold to around 20 territories, according to producer Hilmar Sigurðsson. Munich-based Telepool handles world sales at the Market.

“Watch out Europeans – It’s HEL, the Queen of the underworld, who has claimed responsibility for the eruption in the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and now threatens to ignite Katla!” This message/teaser is available on CAOZ’s website to promote Thor, whose characters are taken from Norse mythology.

Based on the Edda chronicles, the story centres on the young blacksmith Thor, said to be the son of Odin, King of the Gods. He has to fight an army of Giants who take his friends to Hel, the Queen of the Underworld. The film’s co-directors are Oskar Jonasson, Gunnar Karlsson and Toby Genkel.

CAOZ closed the €7.2m budget last last year when Icelandic private investors Titan Investments, Hilmar Gunnarsson and Bru II Venture Capital Fund injected an extra €1.8m to expand the film and CAOZ’s potential on the international market. The private investors – now majority owners of CAOZ – are going to “help the company broaden Thor’s concept into multiple platforms and social media,” said Sigurðsson.

Other European institutions that contributed to the film’s financing include the MEDIA Programme, Icelandic Film Centre, Irish Film Board, Nord Media, Deutsche Film Förderfonds and Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The film will be ready in May 2011. Sena Film will handle the Icelandic release and Filmkompaniet Alpha Finnish distribution.
