Culture budget upheld

The Federal Council of Ministers yesterday approved the proposed budget bill for 2011 and, although spending cuts are the order of the day, the Culture budget will not be affected.

Culture Minister Bernd Neumann insisted that the decision by the Council of Ministers shows the importance the German government attaches to the role of culture in society. He also expressed his delight at not only being able to guarantee the stability of the budget, but also establish new priorities.

The Culture Ministry is continuing its funding programme for the digitisation of theatres. In 2011, €4m will be allocated for this purpose.
