To Die Like a Man represents Portugal in Hollywood

has been selected by the ICA to represent Portugal in the nomination race for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

To Die Like a Man was chosen from among a range of local productions released in theatres between October 2009 and September 2010.

After its premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2009, the film, which depicts the final months in the life of a veteran transvestite in Lisbon, went on to enjoy a successful run of various international festivals. Among other accolades, it won Best Film at the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival and at Mezipatra Festival in the Czech Republic.

The announcement comes just days before the opening of a retrospective of the Portuguese director’s work at the BAMcinématek in New York.
